This Sunday, 16th, the Maracanã stadium completes 74 years since its inauguration, as on the same date in 1950, the stadium was delivered.

The inaugural match of the venue, located in Rio de Janeiro, was a confrontation between the Rio de Janeiro state team and the São Paulo state team, which ended with a 3-1 victory for the São Paulo side.

Goal history

  • The first goal scored in the history of the Maracanã was scored by midfielder Didi;
  • He found the net at the stadium on June 16, 1950, playing for the Rio de Janeiro state team;
  • The inauguration took place almost two years after the start of the construction work, on August 2, 1948.

A stage with renovations

The Maracanã stadium, throughout its existence, has undergone several renovations. Between 1999 and 2000, the venue underwent a remodeling.

On that occasion, the capacity of the venue was reduced and sectors of the stadium, such as the general admission area, were abolished, aiming to bring modernity to the Maracanã.

A few years later, between 2005 and 2007, the stadium underwent another remodeling, this time for the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The last remodeling took place between 2010 and 2013, this time for the World Cup in Brazil. Just like in 1950, the Maracanã was the venue for the final of the tournament.
