In penalties, Brazil beats Japan and finishes third in SheBelieves

Goalkeeper Lorena saves four penalties and is the standout in Ohio; Cristiane equalizes for the Seleção in regular time

The Brazilian national team won, on penalties, against Japan in the third-place match at the SheBelieves Tournament. In Ohio, Brazil won on Tuesday by 3-0. Goalkeeper Lorena was the standout. She saved four penalties, one in normal time and three in the shootout. Cristiane, Tarciane, and Angelina converted their kicks and secured the Brazilian victory.

In regular time, the Brazilian Warriors drew 1-1. Cristiane scored the equalizer at 25 minutes into the second half.

Changes

As usual, coach Arthur Elias made nine changes to the starting lineup. Only Tarciane and Priscila remained in the team. Both played in Brazil’s tournament debut on Saturday (6). Marta, Cristiane, and Thamires started as well.

Japanese goal

Japan opened the scoring. At 34 minutes into the first half, Mina Tanaka scored the opener. She took advantage of a quick counterattack and scored for Japan.

Reaction

In the second half, Japan almost extended their lead. At 18 minutes, Cristiane fouled Hayash in the box. Goalkeeper Lorena saved Tanaka’s penalty. Shortly after, Arthur Elias made four substitutions. He brought in Yasmim, Thaís Ferreira, Gabi Portilho, and Antônia for Thamires, Lauren, Priscila, and Fê Palermo.

Equalizer

The equalizing goal came soon after. At 25 minutes, Cristiane capitalized on a corner kick and leveled the game. It was the 97th goal for the top scorer.

Further changes

At 39 minutes, Brazil made two more substitutions. Ludmila and Laís Estevam replaced Jacque Ribeiro and Júlia Bianchi, respectively. Despite the pressure, the goal didn’t come, and the match went to a penalty shootout.

Lorena stands firm

The Brazilian goalkeeper made history. She saved all three of the Japanese kicks and secured Brazil’s victory. Cristiane, Tarciane, and Angelina converted their penalties.

Opponents in Paris

Japan will face Brazil in the Olympic Games in Paris. The Japanese will be the opponents in the second round of the Olympic tournament. Spain, the current world champion, and Nigeria complete the group.
