After his short but intense stint at Grêmio, Luis Suárez left an indelible mark on Brazilian football. The Uruguayan arrived, saw, and dominated in a very physical and talent-filled football, all at a very advanced age and with constant pain due to unresolved injuries.

Following his departure from Grêmio, there were talks of several Liga MX teams showing interest in his services, rumors that were silenced by Luis Suárez himself prior to his confrontation against Monterrey’s Rayados in the CONCACAF Champions League: “This year, no Mexican team wanted me…”.

Luis Suárez denied that there was any interest from Liga MX in signing him this year

When asked about the possibility of joining Mexican football this year instead of moving to Inter Miami, Luis Suárez denied that any Mexican team had tried to convince him to accept a sporting proposal this year: “This year, no Mexican team wanted me, it was last year,” said the 37-year-old footballer with a laugh.

That’s the key to this topic: “Not this year, but last year, yes.” When leaving Nacional in Uruguay, Cruz Azul sounded out the Uruguayan striker, but he ultimately decided on Grêmio for family reasons, as a “La Máquina” executive recounted at the time.

Upon leaving Grêmio, no Mexican team seems to have considered the possibility of offering him a contract, possibly due to rumors of a possible retirement due to his knee pain. Ultimately, Suárez chose to accept Inter Miami’s proposal for these reasons: “It was the excitement of reuniting with teammates, but more than anything, of coming to a club that only won its first title last year, to make it grow and win titles is what made me want to come and be here.”

However, ahead of the imminent match against Rayados, Luis Suárez also lavished praise on Liga MX and expressed motivation to continue winning and standing out despite his age: “I see it with a lot of excitement. I have the same nerves as when you’re about to play an important match, because that’s what the situation generates. Playing against such a difficult opponent like Monterrey, playing at our home, in a tournament that, as I repeat, generates excitement for us because the club has never won it.”
