Thiago Silva took to social media to apologize to fans for a costly mistake that helped Newcastle increased their lead over Chelsea. The Blues were trailing 2-1 when the Brazilian defender gifted fellow countryman Joelinton a golden chance to score the Magpies’ third goal of the evening. In the end, the London-based outfit lost 4-1 at St. James’ Park.
“I’m devastated. It wasn’t a good day for us. I would like to apologize to everyone for the defeat, especially to my teammates who believe in me and support me every day. I take full responsibility. Let’s gather strength and come back stronger,” Silva wrote.

Thiago Silva becomes oldest player to represent Chelsea
Though it’s hard to find any positives after such an embarrassing defeat, perhaps the only takeaway for Silva after this match is the fact that he became the oldest player to ever take the pitch for Chelsea at 39 years and 64 days.
However, the Blues have plenty of work to do this season. With their recent loss, Mauricio Pochettino’s men are 10th in the Premier League standings with 16 points, 12 shy of UEFA Champions League spots.
As for Thiago Silva, this could be his final year at Stamford Bridge, since his contract is up in June 2024. The Brazilian hasn’t made a decision about his future yet, but a return to Fluminense could be on the cards.
