Joelinton will be on the sidelines for at least six weeks, according to Newcastle coach Eddie Howe. The Brazilian star suffered a thigh injury last time out during his team’s 3-0 victory over Sunderland in the FA Cup.

“It isn’t good, it is an injury that will see him miss a minimum of six weeks, it is a real blow for us. He is such an important player. He has a problem with his tendon in his quad,” said Howe in a press conference ahead of the Magpies’ game against Manchester City in the Premier League. “He is very disappointed, he wants to play and do well – we have had to try and pick him up. He is our midfield driving force, it is a big blow.”

Newcastle’s tough times

This absence is another setback for the Magpies, who are in ninth place in the Premier League standings after three consecutive defeats. The team got off to a strong start but eventually fell apart, so much that it finished bottom in the Champions League group stage.

Joelinton will also miss the next two matches with the Brazilian national team due to the suspension announced this week by FIFA after reviewing the red card he received against Argentina in the World Cup qualifiers. Joelinton came off the bench and was on the field for only ten minutes before being sent off for a foul on Rodrigo De Paul.
