The Brazilian Fabinho, who is in the midst of a top scorer period, is one of the key reasons for Liverpool’s outstanding form, which has seen them finish second in the English Championship and remain in contention for FA Cup, League Cup, and Champions League championships. He has already scored six goals in 28 games this season, an impressive total for a defensive midfielder whose primary role is to score opponents rather than attempt to score goals.
“It’s fantastic. In fact, if I had moved him closer to the box on attacking set pieces, he would have probably scored more goals for Liverpool. We rectified that scenario lately, and he’s been scoring ever since “, said Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp in a news conference on February 13 after Fabinho’s sixth goal of the season in a 1-0 victory against Burnley in the Premier League’s 25th round.
Fábio Henrique Tavares, better known as Fabinho, was born on October 23, 1993, in Campinas, Sao Paulo. Since 2018, the versatile player, who has previously played as a right-back and defender but is now mostly employed as a defensive midfielder, has shone for English Liverpool.
After being revealed by Fluminense in 2012, he departed the club the following year without ever playing a game, negotiating with the Portuguese team Rio Ave. From Spain, he was loaned to Real Madrid, where he lasted between 2012 and 2013, before moving to Monaco in 2013.
He spent two seasons – till 2015 – in the principality club, where he established himself as a superb player. That’s when he began to be called up to the Brazilian national team on a regular basis, and he won the French championship in 2017. This, of course, drew the interest of major European teams, and Liverpool ended up signing him in 2018 for € 45 million (R$ 216 million).
Fabinho became a significant player in the squad managed by German coach Jürgen Klopp after joining at the club from the country of the Beatles. He took part in the 2019 European Champions League, 2019 UEFA Super Cup, and 2020 Premier League championship campaigns.
He has firmly established himself in the Brazilian team’s roster. He has previously competed in the Copa Americas in 2015, 2016 and 2021, and he is expected to be among the 23 players named by coach Tite for this year’s World Cup, which will be held in Qatar from November 21 to December 18. That’s because he started the final game of the qualifications, a 4-0 triumph against Paraguay on February 1.
The Brazilian midfielder has a chance to win every tournament in which Liverpool participates during the current European season (2021-2022). They finished second in the Premier League in the 24th of 38 rounds (9 points behind Manchester City), are in the fifth round of the FA Cup (against Norwich on 2 March), are in the League Cup grand final (against Chelsea on February 27), and are in the round of 16 of the Champions League, where they have already defeated Inter Milan of Italy in the first leg (2-0) and will decide on March 8 at home.
