Manchester City have once again proven how much work Manchester United need to do to catch up to them. With a 3-1 victory on Sunday, the Sky Blues extended their dominance over the crosstown rivals in the last decade, with the Red Devils struggling since Sir Alex Ferguson left.

Casemiro didn’t hide the fact his team has a lot to learn from Pep Guardiola’s side, describing City as United’s “mirror” to get back to the top.

“The first big objective is to catch up with them (City) at this moment,” Casemiro told ESPN Brasil. “Not in terms of history, as the history of United speaks for itself, but they are today the team to beat. Everyone wants to beat City.

“It is very clear the new owners (INEOS) want to evolve the club’s level, with City being our mirror. They have been doing a great job. I hope they (INEOS) help us grow together.”

City take distance from United in the last decade

The numbers since 2013 (when Ferguson left Old Trafford) show a huge contrast between the Citizens’ success and the Red Devils’ decline. While Manchester City won six Premier League titles in the last decade to none of United, their 17 major trophies are also way more than the rivals’ four prizes. Besides, City have been ruling in the derby with 11 wins to 7 losses, while finishing the last 10 seasons above United.

Casemiro left Real Madrid aiming to bring back glory days to Old Trafford, but it hasn’t been easy so far. Only time will tell whether the Brazilian midfielder ultimately achieves his goal.
