The second matchday of the Clausura 2024 in Liga MX had a positive outcome for the Brazilians participating in the competition. Firstly, Gustavo Leal’s Atlético de San Luis defeated Pumas UNAM 3-1 to secure their second consecutive victory. Additionally, Léo Bonatini once again scored for the team.

Another team with a perfect record in the first two matches is André Jardine’s América, as the reigning champs defeated Querétaro 2-0 at the Estadio Azteca. This way, the Águilas have suffered only two defeats in their last 25 matches: one in the Clausura 2023 playoffs (before Jardine’s arrival), and the second in the first round of the Apertura 2023.

Tiago Volpi also celebrated this weekend, scoring from the penalty spot for Toluca in their 4-1 victory over Mazatlán, recording his first goal in 2024. Last year, the veteran Brazilian goalkeeper was one of the top scorers for the Diablos Rojos with nine penalty goals.

Jardine and Leal express satisfaction with their respective teams

“Happy with the team’s performance and the result we achieved. Very happy to see the team becoming more mature and consistent, but we still have room to grow, and it is possible for us to be better. We will work to reach the potential we know we have as a team,” wrote Jardine on his Instagram account after the victory for América.

Leal, on the other hand, appreciated the result of his team, emphasizing that they still have much to improve: “Match by match, we will get better. We will seek to keep the team complete for the upcoming matches. We have some things to improve, but we are very happy with the victory. It was a very important win against Pumas, who were semifinalists. On Wednesday, we play against Tigres, who are finalists. All matches are difficult, but we are a well-prepared team, we work match by match, and starting tomorrow, we will focus on Tigres. I know the quality of my players; we work on reinforcing the confidence we have in them, reminding them of the abilities each one possesses, and they showed everything they have.”
