Brazilian winger Bernard took all the limelight in Panathinaikos’ 1-o victory against Olympique Marseille in the first leg of the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. The 30-year-old came off the bench after 72 minutes to replace Filip Duricic and he proved the coach right.
Only 11 minutes later, the former Shakhtar Donetsk forward finished off a great team play, capitalizing on a perfect assist by Fotis Ioannidis to give the Greek side the lead ahead of the rematch in France.

Bernard’s scoring record with the Athens-based outfit isn’t great, since he has only three goals to his name so far. However, this one could prove to be vital for his team’s continental aspirations. Olympique Marseille will host Panathinaikos on Tuesday, August 15, aiming to turn things around in France.
The winner of this tie will take on Braga or Bačka Topola in the final stage of the Champions League qualifiers.
