Young Gabriel Souza is in his second season in Portugal after being loaned by Bahia to Portimonense. The player, considered one of the main gems of the northeastern club, earned his place among the professionals after standing out in the U23 League Revelação in the 2022-2023 season, playing 13 games. The athlete talked about this experience.
“It has been a very good experience. I am eager to make my debut for the first team, but I know I have to wait for my opportunity. That’s how it is for a goalkeeper. I have a lot of respect for Vinícius, and he has been doing a good job, as well as João and Nakamura, who have a beautiful history at the club. Anyway, I feel that I have evolved tactically here in Europe. I have learned a lot in training day after day with more experienced players. Getting to know great stadiums and playing in the Primeira Liga is a fantastic experience, and I’m making the most of it,” he said.

In the 2023/2024 season, the player played only three matches for the U23 team, performances that were enough for his promotion to the first team. Gabriel is the immediate backup for goalkeeper Vinícius Silvestre, formerly of Palmeiras, who was signed by the Portuguese club this season.
The young player, who has already attracted interest from clubs like Chelsea, Roma, and Real Valladolid, has a contract with Bahia until the end of 2025. However, the Portuguese club has an option to buy the player at the end of the current season. Gabriel has also been called up to the Brazilian youth teams and has won titles in all categories he has played for at the Brazilian club. The player is currently also in the process of obtaining Italian citizenship.
