Neymar is currently going through a complicated period. Seriously injured in his left knee during a Brazil match, he will be away from the field for several months. And this is unfortunately not a first for the 30-year-old star, regularly hampered by physical problems during her career.

According to data collected by the specialized site Transfermarkt, Neymar has already spent at least 1087 days, or almost 3 years, in convalescence since his professional debut. Since 2013, he has suffered no less than 39 different injuries which have sidelined him from the field.

His current unavailability, estimated at a minimum of 6 months, will further add to this sad toll. Although talented, Neymar pays for his physical style of play and his lack of preparation during international breaks. With each relapse, months of competition are lost.

By comparison, Lionel Messi, 5 years older, was away from the field for 746 days during his career. Other stars like Lewandowski, Salah or Griezmann were also much less affected by physical problems.

At only 31 years old, Neymar already has the equivalent of 3 entire seasons without playing. There is no doubt about his incredible talent, but his recurring physical fragility raises questions for the rest of his career at the highest level. It remains to be seen whether he will manage to reverse the trend and finally put on a series of matches…
