Fluminense claimed a very significant win over Ceará on Monday. The win saw Tricolor put an end to a run of 16-years without a win in Castelão.
The last time Fluminense won at the venue goes all the way back to the Copa do Brasil semifinal in 2005.
Coincidentally, Marcão, now Fluminense manager, was the captain on that occasion.
The goals for Fluminense were also special as they all came from youngsters. Kennedy opened the scoring in the first half while Martinelli and Samuel added to the tally in the second period. Late on, Vina could only manage a consolation goal for Ceara from the penalty spot.
It was players of their ‘own’ that got Fluminense the victory on Monday. All their goals at Castelão were scored by youngsters who came through the ranks at the club.
Martinelli in particular has been a shining light for the club this season and even bagged a brace recently in the 3-0 win over Goias. Another debutant had his chance to impress in Samuel and he marked it with a good goal to go with as well.
Fluminense continue their impressive form and extend their unbeaten run to seven games in the Brazilian Championship. Only two points behind Atlético-MG and São Paulo in fifth place, they remain well in the hunt for a direct spot in the Libertadores.
For Ceará, the defeat sees them extend their winless run to four games and they remain in 12th position. They still need two points from their remaining two games to be mathematically guaranteed a spot in in the 2021 Copa Sudamericana.
On Saturday, Ceará travel to take on already relegated Coritiba while Fluminense will return to the pitch on Sunday to take on Santos in Vila Belmiro.
