FIFA sanctioned the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) with 50,000 Swiss francs (about $58,000) for the acts of violence that occurred in the stands of the Maracanã against Argentine fans before the last South American qualifying classic. This was determined by the Disciplinary Commission, which also imposed measures against the last world champion for his response to the situation.

In the case of Brazil, the fine is for “failing to ensure the maintenance of law and order in the stadium and its surroundings and lack of order or discipline in the stadium.” For its part, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) must pay 20,000 Swiss francs ($23,500) for “lack of order or discipline in the stadium or its surroundings.”

The decisions of the Disciplinary Committee, subject to appeal, point to what happened on November 21, when before the initial whistle the police repressed the Albiceleste supporters. Faced with this situation, the Argentine team players left the playing field as a sign of protest and returned once they obtained guarantees that calm would be maintained, which delayed the start of the game for half an hour.

Joelinton is suspended for two games

The CBF was also fined 5,000 Swiss francs ($5,800) and a warning for the “delay of the kick-off” and the “invasion of the playing field” in the qualifying match against Bolivia that was played in Belém. In addition, they must pay 15,000 Swiss francs ($17,600) for “five individual penalties and delay of the kickoff” in the match against Uruguay in Montevideo.

The governing body of world football also announced that Joelinton was sanctioned with two games for the red card he saw against Argentina. That night, the Newcastle footballer came on from the substitutes’ bench and was only on the field for ten minutes when he was sent off for hitting Rodrigo De Paul.
