Brazil currently has the strongest league in South American football. Until 1959, the country’s system of competition was only divided by state, and though the state tournaments continue to be important, the domestic league eventually took over.
Palmeiras are the winningest team in the Brazilian league history with 12 titles to their name, followed by Santos with eight. Flamengo and Corinthians are tied with seven honors each, whereas Sao Paulo boast six.
