Hurricane ran behind the scoreboard throughout the game, drawing twice and with the Bolivian team being the better side for most of the game.
But there was a surprise just at the end of the game with Walter who came from the bench and scored the decisive goal with his first chance.
The Bolivian side have been out of action for six months and put out a performance better than expected.
Commanded by Serginho and with Pato Rodríguez making hell on the sides, Jorge Wilstermann put on the early pressure and opened the scoring after nine minutes, with a goal by Álvarez.
Athletico only managed to level the scoring with the penalty at the end, which Lucho González scored.
Patito continued showing the strength of the Bolivian team in the second half giving the pass to Serginho to score before the ten minutes of second half. Athletico equalized again with Christian, when it seemed he had no strength left to recover and everything changed. Jorge Wilstermann went one man down with the expulsion of Serginho and Walter came in late to score and clinch a crucial winner.
With the victory, Athletico takes the first position in Group C, with six points. Colo-Colo, who beat Peñarol 2-1, also have six points and are in second place. Jorge Wilstermann is third, with three points.
For Libertadores, Athletico will return to the field on September 23, at Arena da Baixada, for the fourth round. Their next game is against Colo Colo. In the Brasileirão, Furacão rests on the weekend and only returns on the other weekend, on the 26th and will take on Bahia.
