In the wake of his reaction to the racial abuse suffered in an away game against Valencia, Vinicius Junior became the face of all those who want to tackle racism in football. As a matter of fact, FIFA president Gianni Infantino appointed the Brazilian star to lead a committee made up by players to punish discriminatory behaviour in the sport.
“There will be no more football with racism in it,” Infantino told Reuters. “The games should be stopped immediately when it happens. Enough is enough. I asked Vinicius to lead this group of players that will present stricter punishments against racism that will later be implemented by all football authorities around the world.”

Vinicius Junior leading worldwide fight against racism in football
Unfortunately, Vini was the target of racial abuse on several occasions throughout the 2022-23 LaLiga season. After being victim of discrimination on various away games with Real Madrid, the Brazilian raised his voice and exposed the racism he suffered throughout the campaign.
“We need to hear the players and what they need to work in a safer environment. We are very serious about it,” Infantino added. “We will implement very blunt and strong punishments to end once and for all with the problem of racism in football. We can’t tolerate racism anymore. As president of FIFA, I feel I needed to talk personally with Vinicius about it.”
In March 2024, Spain and Brazil will meet in an international friendly under the slogan “One skin” to send a clear message against racism in football. Hopefully, it won’t be long before the beautiful game becomes a safe place for everyone.
