After the goalless draw in the first leg in Vila Belmiro, the team led by Guto Ferreira created more chances and tested the opposing goal more often before reaching their goal in a beautiful manner. A volley by Vina sealed the victory. Peixe, now eliminated, will focus all their attention on the Brazilian Championship and Copa Libertadores.
At the start of the first half, Ceará pressed Santos high up the pitch forcing out mistakes for the away side to create chances
and cause problem to João Paulo’s goal who was put into to action multiple times. He made some great saves on the evening.
Peixe had difficulties in the attack because Marinho played little part in the game. Soteldo, on the other hand, was more into the game but missed some couple of chances to put his side in front and break the deadlock following a counterattack situation.
In the second half, both teams returned from the break at a slow pace but Ceará continued to cause problems for the away side while Santos failed to mount a good counterattack. The visiting team had more of the ball but didn’t threaten and couldn’t get pass the opposition half with difficulties in finishing their final passes made. In the 70th minute, Ceará finally got their goal through Vina’s volley.
The match became sour for the visiting team as both Marinho and Sandry Roberto were shown red cards before the final whistle was blown in the 95th and 97th minute.
Ceará returns to the field next Sunday to face Sport while Santos visits Bragantino at Nabi Abi Chedid.
