Vasco bowed out of the Copa Sudamericana in disappointing fashion after losing 1-0 at home to Defensa y Justicia in the second leg of the competiton on Thursday evening. They lost out via a 2-1 aggregate.
The away side’s winning goal came via substitute Hachen just a minute before the hour mark. It was his first goal in the competition this season.
Vasco started the game in promising fashion but they were let down by poor finishing from their striker Ribamar who blew a number of chances to put his side ahead. He lost at least four clear cut chances with two of coming in the first half.
His misses even made teammate Gustavo Torres cut a dejected and frustrated figure upfront as well.
It was also a game to forget for Vasco goalkeeper Lucao who also put in another poor shift once again since replacing Fernando Miguel who is out due to covid-19. The young goalkeeper made quite a number of errors in the first half.
He was also subject of criticism for Defensa y Justicia’s winning goal by Hachen after he found himself in a poor position following a rebound that allowed the striker to fire home easily.
After bowing out of the Copa Sudamericana, Vasco will now fully turn their attention to the Brazilian Championship.
In the league, Vasco are in a lowly 17th position with only 24 points so far. They are in the relegation zone as it stands and without a win in their last three games.
For their next outing, Vasco will face Grêmio on Sunday in Porto Alegre.
