Vasco didn’t play much in the game but had a consistent defence to stop the opposing team from taking the lead.
In the round of 16, Vasco faces Defensa y Justicia from Argentina.
Even with sitting back, Vasco had the best chance to score in the game, but did not take advantage twice with Carlinhos, once in both halves,
and Ribamar, who missed a chance in extra time. Caracas played with 10 men for more than 20 minutes when Villanueva was shown his matching orders.
Ricardo Sá Pinto set up a very defensive system, and Caracas hardly threatened. In fact, the home side did not create any dangerous chance to score for the entirety of the first half.
Vasco also did not play much in the offensive side, but was able to force a save from Velásquez. First attempt was from outside the goal area, then a shot from Carlinhos, who received a sublime pass from Pikanu. The away side also had a goal disallowed in the first half scored by Tiago Reis.
In the 63rd minute, the home side got their only dangerous attempt to go front stopped by the Vasco’s defence. Three minutes later, Villanueva was shown a second yellow card for a bad foul and was correctly given a red.
Vasco did not make use of their advantage even after playing with one man more. Towards the end of the game, Pikachu and Ribamar both lost a good chance to score but failed. The match ended 0-0.
Vasco returns to the field next Sunday to face Palmeiras in São Januário.
