Cariocas had the chance to claim back the top spot after Inter momentarily overtook them on Saturday. However, they failed to convince and now find themselves in second place. Internacional are the current leaders on the log standings.
On the other hand Gremio also did not contribute to ease the criticism they have received so far in the competition. It was yet another woeful performance for Renato Gaúcho’s men who have now drawn four out of their five games played.
Gremio controlled most of the first half but were unable to create any clear cut chances.
The best chance of the half came in the 38th minute Alisson took a shot that hit the post.
The second half saw Vasco dominate instead in similar fashion to their opponents. Vasco missed the best chance of the game when Ricardo was in the face of the goal, without a goalkeeper, and sent the ball over. The game ended goalless.
The result means Vasco lost a golden chance to retake the leadership of the Brasileirão. They currently have a tally of 10 points and are in second place. However, they do have a game in hand. On the other hand, Grêmio fell to ninth position, with seven points so far.
In the middle of the week, both teams will take a break from the Brasileirão. Vasco battle for a spot in the fourth phase of the Brazil Cup and will face Goiás in Goiânia on Wedndesday. Grêmio plays the first game of the Gauchão final against Caxias on the same day.
At the weekend, Vasco return to the Brasileirão against Fluminense while Gremio will leave for the big decision of the state in the Arena.
