In a game that marked the return of fans, Vasco de Ramon Menezes got another very important win. A 2-1 victory over Goiás in regular time on Wednesday leveled the aggregate to 2-2. The game ultimately had to be decided via penalties with goalkeeper Fernando Miguel putting a standout performance on the evening.
Henrique scored the first goal of the game for Vasco in the 33rd minute but the lead didn’t last long with Rafael da Vaz in the final minute of the first half.
The second half came with both teams pushing for a goal but it was Vasco who got the goal early on.
In a beautiful move that took out four players, Andrey found Talles unmarked in the area. The ball then fell to Benítez who took initiative and scored the goal. The aggregate was level at that point.
The game eventually advanced to penalties and Vasco’s Fernando Miguel was the hero of the day. The goalkeeper kept out the penalties taken by Rafael Moura and Marcinho.
In addition to an impressive outing on the pitch, Vasco also earned themselves a nice cash injection. They were awarded R $ 2 million following their progress to the fourth phase of the Copa do Brasil. It is a massive boost for a club that has had financial issues of late.
Vice-leader of the Brasileirão with 10 points and one game less, Vasco will return to the field next Saturday when they take on Fluminense at Maracanã.
On the other hand, Goais will take on Gremio next but will be free this weekend as Gremio will be involved in the Campeonato Gaúcho.
