Vasco and Fortaleza played out to a goalless draw on Thursday in São Januário. The fixture was a late game of the 16th round of the Brazilian Championship. Fortaleza was slightly the better side and saw more possession of the ball as well. They also missed good chances to score especially in the latter stages of the game when Bergson blew a golden opportunity to break the deadlock.
They would have preferred a win no doubt but the result comes as a relief to an extent for Fortaleza.
Leão do Pici came off the back of four consecutive defeats in the Brasileirão. Two of those defeats came at the hands of ex-boss Rogério Ceni, one with interim coach Marcone Montenegro and the last one with t current coach Marcelo Chamusca.
However, Marcelo Chamusca will be pleased with his side’s all-round performance against Vasco as they recorded their first point under his regime and went close to taking all three points.
On the path of Vasco, they had great difficulty in creating clear-cut chances in the game against Fortaleza. One problem the team had to face moments before the game was the loss of Martín Benítez, who tested positive for covid-19 and had to miss the game. As it stands, Vasco have eight players currently ruled out of action due to covid-19: Benítez, Carlinhos, Miranda, Castan, Ribamar, Ulisses, Tiago Reis and Fellipe Bastos.
With the result, Vasco remain in 16th place with 23 points won so far. Fortaleza are slightly ahead in 12th position with 25 points.
For their next outing, Vasco returns to the field next Sunday against São Paulo in Morumbi while Fortaleza visit Botafogo at Nilton Santos later that day.
