When Botafogo announced Tiago Nunes on November 21, the goal was clear: to quickly turn things around in order to secure the Brasileirao title. However, the Brazilian coach has not achieved any victories since his arrival in Rio de Janeiro, with three draws in as many games.

The 2-2 tie with Fortaleza wasn’t so painful due to the way the match unfolded, but the next two games left a bitter taste for Fogao. Against Santos, victory slipped away at the 90th minute, while with Coritiba things were even worse. Just when it seemed that Tiquinho was giving them a dramatic victory at the 97th minute, two points slipped through the Lone Star’s fingers at the 99th minute, right before the final whistle. Therefore, Nunes’ frustration for not being able to win is understandable.

Tiago Nunes voices frustration with Botafogo’s current situation

“I feel quite frustrated. I see a hardworking group. They work hard to achieve goals and results. It’s time to take full responsibility. We know we have to evolve, not only on the field but also in knowing how to close a game, lead a game at the end. Experience is only gained by living,” he said.

The constant managerial changes have taken a toll on Botafogo. Luís Castro left after a brilliant start to lead Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr, and even though Caçapa won all four games as interim, the team fell apart under Bruno Lage. They couldn’t find the right formula even after his dismissal, as in Lúcio Flávio’s interim stint, Fogao continued to drop points.

With two matches remaining, the Rio de Janeiro-based team is second in the table with 63 points, three behind leaders Palmeiras. Its next challenge will be on Sunday (3), when it hosts Cruzeiro. Botafogo’s last match of the season will be on Wednesday, December 6, when they visit Internacional in Porto Alegre.
