On November 27, Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras won the Copa Libertadores da América for the third time in its history, by beating rival Flamengo by 2-1 in overtime, in a single game in Montevideo, Uruguay. The audience and income of the fans who attended the Centenário stadium were not disclosed.
Verdão had already won the most important competition on the South American continent in 1999 and 2020, and now joins São Paulo, Grêmio and Santos as the only Brazilians to win the tournament in three occasions.
The final against Flamengo was close. The game ended 1-1 and had to go into overtime. In regular time, Raphael Veiga opened the scoring for the team from São Paulo, and Gabigol tied for the cariocas. In the first stage of extra time Deyverson scored the title goal
Libertadores 2021 took place between February 23 and November 27 and had 47 participating teams from ten countries affiliated to the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol), the organizers of the tournament. Palmeiras, having been the current champion, had already entered the tournament in the group stage.
Brazilian football has diminished Argentina’s lead in the number of tournament achievements after this season. Now, the Argentines follow with 25 cups against 21 of the Brazilians.
Porco earned $15 million for the title, while vice Fla took $6 million home. Palmeiras entered the field with Weverton, Mayke, Gustavo Gómez, Luan, Piquerez, Danilo, Zé Rafael, Gustavo Scarpa, Raphael Veiga, Dudu and Rony. Portuguese coach Abel Ferreira also placed Gabriel Menino, Felipe Melo, Patrick de Paula, Danilo Barbosa and Deyverson.
With the achievement, Palmeiras guaranteed a place in the FIFA Club World Cup, to be played in February of next year. They also won the right to compete in the Copa Sudamericana 2022 cup, against Athletico-PR – winner of the Copa Sudamericana – on February 23rd and March 2nd, 2022.
