Frank Lampard had every reason to be happy with his team’s performance on Wednesday night, as Chelsea progressed into the next round of the Carabao Cup thanks to the 6-0 win over Barnsley.
But one of the players that impressed him the most was Brazilian central defender Thiago Silva who made his debut, since moving to Stamford Bridge on a one-year deal last month.
Tammy Abraham opened the scoring for the Blues while another new signing in Kai Havertz also grabbed a hattrick.
Ross Barkley and Olivier Giroud were also on target as the hosts eased into the fourth round at Stamford Bridge.
After the game, Frank Lampard was sure to heap praise on veteran defender Thiago Silva.
“It is exciting for us because he has had just over a week training with us. It was a perfect 60 minutes for him tonight. He will show the qualities he has. Of course, he will get fitter and better,” Frank said via Football.london.
“He also gave us something for me on the night in the dressing room and on the pitch of a leader with authority in terms of his demands on others.”
“He can’t speak the language but at the minute that’s not even a problem because his presence and the way he commands people around him is already showing that to me in training and in our game tonight.”
Thiago Silva is expected to bring the needed leadership and experience in Chelsea’s defense, which has struggled over the past few years. Chelsea take on West Brom next and the Brazilian defender is in line to start as well.
