The 2023 season has been far from quiet for Flamengo. Shortly after being eliminated from the Copa Libertadores at the hands of Olimpia, the Brazilian giants have to deal with another problem within their squad. According to Globo Esporte, Gerson and Guillermo Varela had a heated argument that ended up with fists and a broken nose for the Uruguayan.
The fight reportedly took place in the final minutes of training, when Gerson made an ugly challenge on Varela. The defender seemed to complain with the midfielder, who punched Varela in the face after evading fists from him. The Uruguayan is believed to have suffered a fractured nose as a result.

“Flamengo can confirm that the dispute between Gerson and Varela was resolved internally. Preparation for tomorrow’s game continues as usual,” the club said on social media after the news went viral.
While Mengao fans hope the club can handle this situation, it is definitely concerning since it’s not the first time there’s a fight within team members. Not long ago, Pedro was punched in the mouth by Pablo Hernandez, who was removed from Jorge Sampaoli’s coaching staff after the incident.

Flamengo need to turn the page fast, because a challenging game is up front. On Wednesday, the Rio de Janeiro-based outfit will welcome Gremio in the return leg of the Copa do Brasil semifinals. Mengao won the first leg 2-0, but they cannot take anything for granted.
