A 3-2 victory for Juventus against Porto was not enough to see them advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Not even Cristiano Ronaldo could bail his side out on the evening.
Three Brazilians were on the pitch for the showdown as both sides battled it out for a spot among the last eight of Europe’s elite club competition.
Arthur and Alex Sandro starred for Juventus while Brazilian forward Otavio starred for Porto.
Coming into the game with a 2-1 lead, Porto put themselves in a promising position at the Allianz stadium after Sergio Oliveira scored just before the 20th minute mark from the penalty spot.
The first half ended that way but the game soon took a different turn in the second period. Federico Chiesa grabbed the equalizer with a neat finish from a tight spot just four minutes into the second half. A moment that went on to change the game came in the 54th minute when Taremi was shown his second yellow card after kicking the ball away angrily.
Chiesa then headed home a Juan Cuadrado cross from close range in the 63rd minute to bring the game level via aggregate.
It seemed like Juventus would make the most of their numerical advantage but Porto held on firmly to take the game into extra time.
Cristiano Ronaldo then had a moment to forget where he turned his back on the wall and a free-kick from Oliveira squeezed through his legs and past Szczensy for Porto’s second of the night. That goal was all that the Portuguese giants needed to go through.
Chiesa added one more for Juventus but it only turned out to be consolation as Porto advanced on away goals, despite a 4-4 aggregate.
Yet another exit from the Champions League means Juventus have now bowed out of the competition on away goals at this stage of the competition for the second season in succession.
