Luis Suárez made his mark in the short time he has been with Gremio: he leads the assists table in Brasileirao and is third in the scoring list with 14 goals. These stats not only earned him the fans’ love but also the title of distinguished citizen of Porto Alegre for his worldwide recognition and the visibility he brought to the city with his arrival.

“It is an honor to be a distinguished citizen of a city that embraced me magnificently from the first moment, from my arrival at the airport, both for me and my wife and children. It was something very beautiful that we experienced from the first day,” said the Uruguayan upon receiving the distinction at the Municipal Chamber of Porto Alegre.

“In this city, we leave friends, our children leave friendships, I leave unique moments like scoring goals in the derbies. But I will keep the affection that the people of Porto Alegre gave me. I appreciate the affection, both from Gremio and Internacional fans,” he said in a message that sounded like a farewell. “Going to a team and having the rival fans love you is not easy, and I have to be thankful for that.”

The uncertainty about Luis Suárez’s next destination

The 36-year-old forward would leave Gremio after the conclusion of Brasileirao, with only three matches remaining. His next destination is uncertain, but the press has long claimed that he already has an agreement to go to Inter Miami as a free agent, where he would reunite with his friend Lionel Messi and other former FC Barcelona teammates such as Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

But for now, Suárez’s focus is on Gremio, who are fifth in the standings and only four points behind the leaders. The Gaucho tricolor needs to recover from the two consecutive losses in the Brazilian league to keep their title aspirations alive and secure, at least, a place in the next Copa Libertadores.
