Vasco have seen their request to cancel the game against Internacional on February 14 cancelled. The game was valid for the 36th round of the Brazilian Championship. The decision was taken by the Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva (STJD), the Superior Court Sports Football in Brazil on Thursday.
In that match, Internacional went on to win by a 2-0 score-line in a game marred by VAR inconsistency. There was confusion when Rodrigo Dourado opened the scoring. He was clearly offside but VAR surprisingly did not work. After three minutes of waiting for the VAR, referee Flavio Rodrigues de Souza had no choice but to count the goal in a field decision.
Vasco have already confirmed they won’t be put back by the latest decision and will push for another appeal.
“The Vasco da Gama Club de Regatas deeply regrets the decision of the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD), taken this Thursday (03/04), which outright rejected the request to challenge the match against Internacional.” Vasco released in a statement.
“Vasco da Gama was fired the club with the greatest unfavorable decisions of the VAR in the Brazilian Championship of Series A of 2020. There were 18 contrary interventions. The board will not give up fighting to assert the rights of the club “.
In his argument, the president of the Superior Court of Sports, Otávio Noronha, states that there was no “error of law” in the decision that saw Rodrigo Dourado’s goal count.
It’s important to note that three points from that game would not save Vasco from relegation, alongside others. However, it could be a chance to help their finances. Vasco are currently planning to take legal action against CBF and Hawk-Eye, the company that operates the VAR in the Brazilian Championship.
They intend to ask for a R $ 100 million in compensation. That amount is also the estimated value that Vasco will probably lose in revenue made following their demotion to Serie B.
