Since the opening of the new Verdão stadium, Tricolor has played nine games, lost eight and drew once. Being the better team on the pitch, Fernando Diniz’s team were able to go toe-to-toe with the opponent’s pressuring and had the patience to take the game to Palmeiras.
In the first half, the first chance came only after seven minutes, when Igor Vinicius tried his luck from outside the area but sent it wide.
A minute later, Luan took advantage of the defensive midfielder error and placed Brenner in a great position to score, but the striker kicked his shot over the goal.
São Paulo almost opened the score at 21st minute, when Igor Gomes headed a cross from Reinaldo putting Jailson to the test. Towards the end of the first half Palmeiras improved and started to take chances of their own.
In the second half, São Paulo created the first chance to score. Igor Gomes received a cross from Reinaldo, but was only able to draw a great save from Jailson. São Paulo’s luck grew as they were rewarded a penalty in the 55th minute which was taken and scored by Reinaldo.
In the final stretch of the game, Palmeiras, who had made all five substitutions, had Luan injured on the field and had to play with ten men for the final period of the game.
With one man down, São Paulo knew how to hold on to Verdão’s pressure and were able to kill the game late on in the 90th minute, when Igor Vinicius gave Vitor Bueno a wonderful assist to finish the game 2-0.
