São Paulo are now the new leaders of the Brasileirão! In a result that was widely expected, they beat struggling Goiás 3-0 on Thursday night in Goiânia. The game was actually valid for a game that was postponed since the very first round of the competition. It was postponed at the time due to a covid-19 outbreak that saw Goiás with more than 10 players ruled out.
A goal from Igor Gomes in the first half, and one each from Brenner and Hernanes in the second period saw São Paulo stroll to an easy victory to the delight of manager Fernando Diniz.
The hosts were the better side for most of the game and were never really troubled at all.
It took only 20 minutes for São Paulo to open the scoring when Igor Gomes took a shot from outside the box that went into the far right corner. Juanfran and Brenner also had chances of their own but couldn’t convert them. Goiás only had one shot at goal the whole first half and never really looked convincing.
Just four minutes into the second half, Gabriel Sara connected to Brenner with a pass in the box and the striker fired home to make it his 18th goal for São Paulo in 2020. He is their top scorer as well. Seven minutes from time, Hernanes grabbed one for the hosts to secure a convincing win.
São Paulo are now top of the Brasileirão standings with 44 points and two ahead of Atletico-MG at 42points. Even better that Tricolor still have a game in hand. Goiás remain rooted to the bottom of the table.
São Paulo will play their next league outing against Sport on Sunday. Goiás take on Atlético-GO the next day in Goiânia.
