São Paulo laid an early marker in the Brasilerao title race after a well-rounded 3-0 over second-place Atlético-MG at Morumbi on Wednesday night. Igor Gomes opened the scoring in the 25th minute to put São Paulo in the lead going into the break.
The game looked to be ending with that score-line until things got worse for Atlético-MG.
Allan got a second yellow in the space of seven minutes and got dismissed in the 75th minute. Eight minutes after that, Gabriel Sara then doubled the lead for São Paulo with a good header.
The icing on the cake was wrapped up when Toró got a goal in extra time. It was all the more note-worthy that the forward had only been on the pitch for two minutes prior to his goal.
Following that result, São Paulo are back to winning ways after losing to Corinthians last week while Atlético-MG see their four-game unbeaten run come to an end.
With the result, São Paulo move up to 53 points and open up a seven-point gap ahead of Atlético-MG at 46 points. Flamengo are currently third with 45 points and can move second and five off São Paulo in the event that they win their own game as well.
In the Brasilerao, both sides will return for the competition on the 26th of December. São Paulo travel to Maracanã to take on Fluminense while Atlético-MG play host to Coritiba.
Just before next weekend, will first of all switch their focus to the Copa do Brasil where they have a clash with Grêmio for the semifinals on the 23rd of December.
