São Paulo continued their recent impressive form as they deservedly beat Rentistas 2-0 in Morumbi on Thursday night. The game was valid for the second round of the Libertadores.
It was a game where Tricolor fully dominated and the result at full time was never in doubt.
After dominating their opponents by far, São Paulo finally made their possession count after Daniel Alves received a pass in the area, beat the goalkeeper and put his side in the lead.
It was more of the same in the second half as São Paulo continued to dominate the game but failed to build on their lead. Just when the game looked like it would end in a 1-0 result, García handled an Igor Gomes bicycle with his arm and a penalty was awarded in the 90th minute. Reinaldo scored the resulting spot-kick and put the game beyond doubt for Tricolor.
Eight victories on the trot
With the result, São Paulo are currently one of the most in-form Brazilian sides as they won their eight successive game across all competitions. Their previous victories were against São Caetano (5-1), Red Bull Bragantino (1-0), Guarani (3-2), Palmeiras (1-0), Sporting Cristal (3-0), Santo André (2-0) and Ituano (3-0). In addition to the wins, they also have five consecutive games where they didn’t concede a goal.
With the victory, São Paulo are up to six points and continue to lead Group E in the Libertadores. Racing-ARG are in second, with four points, following their 2-1 victory over Sporting Cristal.
For their next Libertadores game, São Paulo will take to the pitch next Wednesday, in what could be their toughest group stage game against Racing in Argentina. Before that though, they have the Paulistão, and it is another big game. On, Tricolor travel to take on Corinthians in what should be an interesting clash.
