The victory was not enough to make the home side to advance to the round of 16 of the South American Cup. Lanús advanced by the criterion of away goals after winning 3-2 in Buenos Aires.
This is the third elimination of Tricolor in the season.
They have already been eliminated in Paulistão’s quarterfinals to Mirassol and were eliminated in the group stage of the Libertadores de América.
The first half was dominated by the away side. They were rewarded with a goal in the 17th minute into the game with an outside shot from De la Vega after a mistake from Tchê Tchê. Then in the 27th minute, the home side got their equaliser following a corner kick taken by Reinaldo cross headed in by Daniel Alves.
São Paulo came close to going behind in the 36th minute but goalkeeper Volpi was up to it and kept it out. Minutes later, in the 44th minute, Aguirre put his side in the lead before the break.
In the second half, São Paulo started more aggressively. In the 62nd minute, São Paulo’s pressure paid off and they got their goal through Teixeira levelling up the goals on the score line. Three minutes before the end of the game, Nicolas scored an own goal gifting the home side the lead before Gabriel extended the teams advantage to 4-2.
It seemed as though the game was going to end with the home side advancing to the next round, but Nicolas Orsini had something else in mind. He scored in the 93rd to put Lanús in the advantage on goal difference eliminating the Tricolor.
