São Paulo and Vasco shared a point apiece in a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at Morumbi. The game was valid for the 22nd round of the Brazilian Championship.
Tricolor missed out on the opportunity to go level on points with league leaders Atlético-MG who are level on points with Flamengo.
Cruz-Maltino, on the other hand, got an important point in the fight to escape the relegation zone.
São Paulo started the first half with the upper hand but failed to pressure their opponent. Tricolor had it difficult getting close to Vasco’s goal area and created little. Their best chance of the half came from a free-kick taken by Gabriel Sara which was saved by goalkeeper Lucão.
The away side soon drew first blood. In a counter-attacking situation in the 19th minute, German Cano opened the scoring with a shot past Tiago Volpi into his goal.
Tricolor levelled things up few minutes later in the 33rd minute with the help of Vasco’s mistake. Jadson gave away a misplaced pass in the goal area allowing Luciano to score at close range.
The first half ended in a draw.
In the second half, São Paulo made some changes in an attempt to win but Vasco remained resolute in defence.
Brenner came face to face with the goalkeeper Lucão minutes into the second period but his efforts were saved.
São Paulo were persistent until the final minutes looking for the winning goal but couldn’t get the final pass into the back of the net. The game ended 1-1.
São Paulo will take on Ceará next on Wednesday for the Serie A while Vasco play two days later when they travel to Argentina to take on Defensa y Justicia for the Copa Sudamericana.
