It was the first Santos victory and the first Athletico defeat in the 2020 edition of the championship.
Soteldo and Felipe Jonatan both scored for Santos in the first half,
and Marinho wrapped things up for Pexie in the final stages of the game. Abner Vinicius grabbed one back for Athletico two minutes from time but it only turned out to be nothing than a consolation goal.
Marinho ended the game and turned out to be the most decisive player on the pitch. The striker was involved in all of Santos‘ three goals. He provided assists for the first two, Soteldo and Felipe Jonatan, and wrapped things up by getting on the score sheet himself.
Despite the victory, Santos suffered a little setback. In the same move, the duo of defender Lucas Veríssimo and goalkeeper Vladimir got injured. They had an ugly shock when cutting off a dangerous attack by Athletico. Veríssimo, hit in the knee, was the first to leave, in the 25th minute of the first half. Vladimir held on for another nine minutes but eventually had to leave the pitch as well. He left the field crying.
It was the only gloss of the day as Santos eased out to a convincing victory.
With their first victory at the Brasileirão, Santos jumped to four points, in eighth place. Athletico, after losing 100%, left the leadership and fell to fifth place, with six points. They are tied in points with three teams but behind all of them in the tiebreaker criteria.
The two teams return to the field at midweek for the Brasileirão. Athletico plays on Wednesday against Palmeiras. Santos will take on Sport the next day.
