This would be the second consecutive game without a win for Inter (they had lost to América-MG, Wednesday in the Copa do Brasil) under the leadership of Abel Braga. After a weak first half, both teams came out of the break hungrier for goals to clinch the victory. Santos were the more clinical with Ivonei and Kaio Jorge scoring the goals that secured the win.
In the face of so many absentees, it is only natural for the contest between Santos and Inter to be postponed or cancelled.
But, with the game carrying on, the two teams lacked creativity in the game. Both Peixe and Colorado created little to no chances and could only threaten with long range shots.
John was called to action early when he saved Rodinei’s shot and Lomba saved Inter from Marinho. But both teams however, didn’t manage to draw anything out of the first 45 minutes after exchanging great passes and having better elaborate plays.
In the second half, both teams came out of the break better. Just five minutes into the game, Inter created two great chances that were parried away by the Santos’ goalie. John prevented Abel Hernández at close range and saved Thiago Galhardo’s headed effort.
When it seemed Inter would be the first to draw first blood, the home side struck in the 59th minute when Ivonei hit a cross which deflected off the pitch and went in.
Just nine minutes after the goal, Santos extended their advantage. Kaio Jorge headed in at close range from a rebounded Arthur Gomes’ shot.
Inter failed to make something happen and the game ended 2-0 in favour of the hosts.
Santos returns to face Athletico-PR next Saturday in Curitiba. Inter will play against Fluminense on Sunday in Beira-Rio and will be looking to get back to winning ways.
