Despite having the better chances in the game, Uruguay were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw against Paraguay in a South American World Cup qualifier on Thursday.
Uruguay’s Jonathan Rodriguez had a goal disallowed for offside in the first half, while Luis Suarez hit the crossbar with a close-range header.
Uruguay dominated the game, with Suarez putting up a brave effort and substitute Facundo Torres wreaking havoc. However, they were unable to score the game-winning goal on a pitch featuring rapid transitional play from front to central.
Paraguay have now gone eight games without losing in competitive games, the longest of such streak they have had since 2011.
Both teams have seven points after five games in the race to Qatar 2022, eight points behind leaders Brazil, who have won all their five games so far.
The top four teams in the 10-team group qualify outright, while the fifth-placed team will participate in an intercontinental playoff.
In another result of note, Bolivia had earlier in the day beaten Venezuela 3-1 to claim their first win of the season.
For the home team, Marcelo Moreno scored two goals. The first one came five minutes into the game and the second with seven minutes remaining.
Jhon Chancellor equalized for Venezuela after 26 minutes, and Diego Ibanez recovered Bolivia’s lead on the hour mark.
With the win, Bolivia have moved away from the bottom of the standings, while Peru is the only team in the top 10 that has yet to win. The Bolivians will face Colombia later on Thursday for their next outing
