Despite opting to rest majority of their starters, Palmeiras were still the dominant side as they raced to a 2-0 victory over Ferroviária at Allianz Parque on Sunday. It was the second consecutive win for Verdão in the competition.
The goals were scored by two of the club’s youngsters. Danilo grabbed the first goal in the early stages of the second half before Rafael Elias put the game beyond doubt in extra time.
In the first half, Palmeiras and Ferroviária were pretty eventful in the game but clear cut chances of goal were lacking in particular.
On the path of Ferroviária, they had room to operate on the counter, but were unable to make use of their chances.
Lucas Lima was particularly isolated and did not see much of the ball at all for Palmeiras. However, things soon changed in the second half.
Palmeiras managed to find a breakthrough eventually as they moved past a resolute Ferroviária defence. Danilo was on par to head home a corner kick from Gustavo Scarpa in the 54th minute.
There was still time for one more to be added. In stoppage time, Rafael Elias capitalized on poor decision making of Ferroviária goalkeeper Saulo and bagged the second of the night for Verdão.
With the victory, Palmeiras are now up to seven points in Group C, level on points with Ituano who are in third place. Ferroviária suffer their first defeat in the Paulista Championship but still remain level on points with leaders São Paulo.
Despite Paulista’s likely halt, Palmeiras will still be able to take on São Bento at the Independência stadium on Wednesday. Due to the restrictions laid down by the São Paulo government, the São Paulo Football Federation will consider taking the game to Minas Gerais.
