One point against Bolívar on Wednesday was enough, but the fans of Verdão could not stand to see the team draw and was presented with a 5-0 victory at Allianz Parque, with goals from Willian, Wesley, Matías Viña, Raphael Veiga and Ron (finally!).
Verdão wins again after three straight draws, two for the Brasileirão and one for the South American competition.
The victory took Palmeiras to 13 points in the lead of Group B. Bolívar, with four, in third, is practically eliminated. It will only have a chance to qualify if Guaraní loses to Tigre this Thursday. If so, the Bolivian team would have to beat Paraguay in the last round and make a big difference in the goal difference.
The 5-0 win against Bolívar made Palmeiras break an important scoring mark. Today’s result is the team’s biggest breakthrough in the 21st century at the Copa Libertadores. The last victory by five or more goals difference had occurred in 1995, in the 7-0 victory over El Nacional, from Ecuador.
All together, the victory was a very assuring one for Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s side and they can take confidence from the manner of their win.
Palmeiras will return to the field next Saturday, at 19h, to face Ceará at Allianz Parque, for the 13th round of the Brazilian Championship. For Libertadores, Verdão ends the group stage on October 21, at 21:30, against Argentine Tigre, also at home.
