Palmeiras’ 2-0 victory over Grêmio at Allianz Parque on Wednesday puts them in a strong position in the standings, since it is their fourth consecutive victory, putting them in first place for the time being.
Raphael Veiga and Gustavo Scarpa teamed to score the game’s first goal just seconds into it. Gabriel Menino extended the hosts’ lead 15 minutes later.
Palmeiras dominated the first 45 minutes, gaining the lead within seconds of the game starting. Raphael Veiga received a lovely ball in the area from Gustavo Scarpa and tapped it in to open the scoring, the Verdao stadium’s fastest goal since 2014.
Grêmio were unable to respond after that, and they were shortly punished and conceded another goal. Gabriel Menino took advantage of the space left by Diogo Barbosa after a cross from Matas Via to make it 2-0 in less than 20 minutes of the first half.
After the halftime, Grêmio made three substitutes, bringing on Ruan, Léo Pereira, and Ricardinho, prompting the visitors to create their first significant chance of the game, forcing Jailson to make a fantastic save.
Tricolor started to come alive, getting the ball into the attacking area and causing havoc on the Palmeiras defence, but they couldn’t keep up the pace.
Abel Ferreira made some adjustments to his team, replacing Ron and Wesley with Breno Lopes and Deyverson in order to keep the advantage and slow the game down. It worked, and Verdao went on to win their league match for the fourth time in a row despite missing many more chances to extend their lead.
It continues a poor run of form for Grêmio who remain without a win this season and remain rooted to the relegation zone.
On Saturday, Palmeiras will meet Santos at Allianz Parque. Grêmio, on the other hand, will host Internacional at home on the same day.
