Verdao took another good step in a strong revival after some recent woeful perfomances of late. Patrick scored the winning goal in the second half, in a beautiful first shot after Willian’s pass. Luiz Adriano, with a penalty, opened the scoring, while Ramires leveled for Peixe at the time.
Palmeiras dominated most of the game, creating chances mainly from medium and long distance shots.
Bruno Henrique forced two great saves from João Paulo early on. The game played out with both sides looking for chances but to no avail. Just at the stroke of the first half, the deadlock was broken.
Alison deflected Bruno Henrique’s free kick with his arm, and VAR recommended the penalty kick confirmed on the field. Luiz Adriano hit and opened the scoring.
The second half saw Santos chasing for the equalizer and they did so almost immediately. Three minutes into the second half, Ramires leveled the scoring for both sides.
12 minutes from time, Patrick de Paula scored the winner with a beautiful shot that turned out to be the winner for Palmeiras over Santos.
This is the sixth time both sides are meeting in the derby this year. This was the first victory for either side. Previous results have been four draws and one defeat. Santos remains without beating their biggest rivals in 2020.
The victory takes Palmeiras to eight points in four matches, while Santos remains with seven and they have already played five games.
Palmeiras returns to the field next Saturday to face Bahia in Salvador. Santos plays the next day when they receive Flamengo in Vila Belmiro. Both games will be for the sixth round of the Brasileirão.
