For the fourth time in their history, Palmeiras have been crowned champions of the Copa do Brasil.
A 2-0 victory over Grêmio on Sunday at Allianz Parque saw Verdão beat their opponents over two legs. For the latest outing, goals from Wesley and Gabriel Menino secured yet another victory for Palmeiras. They already won the first leg by a 1-0 score-line in Porto Alegre, meaning an overall aggregate victory of 3-0 was the final result after both legs.
The title still counts as one from 2020 and sees Palmeiras officially end that campaign on a high. A third trophy for Palmeiras from the just concluded season sees them equal their feat from 28 years ago when they also finished the campaign with three titles.
In addition to the latest Copa do Brasil honors, Palmeiras also won the Paulistão and Libertadores da América competitions for 2020.
For Grêmio, they missed out on a chance to level Cruzeiro as the most successful side in the Copa do Brasil history. With five titles to their name, Tricolor could have gone level with Cruzeiro who have six titles. The latest win for Palmeiras sees them move up to four titles and now the third most successful side in the competition.
The win also crowns a successful year for Verdão in terms of finances as they claimed over R $ 227 million in total as prize money from all competitions combined.
Finally, the 2020 season is over and Palmeiras and Grêmio can now look forward to the 2021 campaign. For their next outing, Verdão will take on São Caetano on Thursday in a delayed game of the first round of Paulistão.
