Palmeiras were victorious against América-MG on Wednesday and are through to the cup finals. The 2-0 win takes Verdão closer to their fourth Brazilian cup title where they will face Grêmio who defeated São Paulo in the other semifinal.
Luiz Adriano and Rony were on target for the São Paulo team after both sides settled for a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the semi-finals.
The finals will also be Abel Ferreira first final at the helm of the club since his appointment.
América-MG and Palmeiras started the game slowly with few chances created, showing no hunger for a side worthy for a spot in the finals. The only time Palmeiras came close to scoring was when Marcos Rocha took a free-kick and Matheus Cavichioli failed to clear his lines allowing Gómez to coming close to opening up the scoring but failed.
After the break, the game play improved and América-MG came back more aggressive in attack, causing problems for their opponent without taking any clear-cut chances. Coach Abel Ferreira had to make three changes in the 60th minutes bringing in Lucas Lima, Gustavo Scarpa and Patrick de Paula to help improve the game.
Gradually, Palmeiras started to get into the game and opened up the scoring in the 69th minute. Luiz Adriano grabbed the goal after receiving the ball from Ron and got pass his marker to fire past Matheus Cavichioli in the left corner.
Verdão controlled the game after striking first, and did not give Coelho the chance to react. In the 85th minute, the São Paulo side extended their advantage. Ron scored the second after a rebound from Mayke’s header
The Copa do Brasil final will be played across two legs on February 3 and 10. The stadiums for the games will be decided via a lottery format.
