The game was valid for the 14th round of the competition.
After a rather slow warm first half, the teams returned with everything they got to offer for the final 45 minutes.
In the touch of the second half, Pedro Raul opened up to scoring following a well-orchestrated cross from Kevin. Three minutes later, Caio Alexandre put the ball into the net to give Botafogo a shock 2-0 lead. Palmeiras started to get into the game and equalized through Willian after a ball was deflected by Wesley in the 76th minute.
Late into the second half, in the 85th minute, Cavalieri saved Willian’s penalty and helped secure the most awaited three points. The result also ended the São Paulo team’s unbeaten run in the Brazilian Championship. It was a crucial win for Botafogo who had been languishing in the bottom ends of the standings. For Palmeiras, it was heartbreak after a good run of results.
Botafogo’s victory did not just end Palmeiras’ unbeaten streak in the Brasileirão. The result ended a 20 game unbeaten record in all competition held by Sao-Paulo.
Palmeiras’ last defeat was against Corinthians, on July 22, for the Campeonato Paulista.
With the victory, Botafogo is out of the relegation zone with 15 points. Palmeiras, on the other hand, drops places to fifth still with 22 points on the table.
Palmeiras will face São Paulo, at Allianz Parque, next Saturday for the 15th round of the Brazilian Championship. On Sunday, Botafogo will go to Ilha do Retiro to face Sport.
