Giants such as Palmeiras, Cruzeiro, Grêmio, Botafogo, Internacional and Vasco da Gama are among those who have lost their top division status in recent years. However, some clubs can boast of never having been relegated to the second division.

The four Brazilian teams that have never been relegated to the second division are Flamengo, São Paulo, Santos and Cuiabá. While the first three have participated in the 66 editions of the championship, the latter joined the first division in 2021 (20 years after its foundation) and since then has maintained itself at the highest level.

Among the big clubs, Vasco is the one with the most accumulated relegations (4), followed by Bahia and Botafogo, with three each.

Will another big club go down in 2023?

The 2023 Brazilian football season sees a few popular clubs at risk. Here is the situation:

Vasco is once again under threat of returning to Serie B as he sits last with nine points after 16 rounds. However, the arrival of Ramón Díaz and some reinforcements like Gary Medel still gives him hope to reverse the situation.

Bahia is in 17th place with 15 points, one point from salvation.

Meanwhile, Santos are fearful of suffering their first ever relegation, having picked up just 17 points in 17 rounds.

Directly above are Corinthians, who have collected just 19 points from 16 games played.

There is still more than half of the championship to play, so it is too early to draw conclusions. That said, several prestigious institutions are already looking to get out of the lower zone of the ranking.
