On Tuesday afternoon, Vasco officially announced the departures of head coach Ricardo Sá Pinto as well as the club’s executive director of football in André Mazzuco.
The decision was jointly taken by current club president Alexandre Campello and Jorge Salgado, who will take over from that role starting January.
Reports say Sá Pinto was informed of his dismissal on the dawn of Tuesday.
Alongside the head coach, his Portuguese trio of assistant Rui Mota, physical trainer Miguel Moreira and analyst Igor Dias will also leave the club.
André Mazzuco’s departure from the executive director of football role means the club can only bring in a new name to fill that spot. Mazzuco’s has been in charge of that role since January 2019 and a new successor would be chosen by incoming president Jorge Salgado.
There is nothing official yet but reports claim the replacement could be Alexandre Bird who is expected to leave his current role with São Paulo.
Regarding the dismissals, a statement on Vasco’s website read: “The Vasco da Gama Club de Regatas announces that Ricardo Sá Pinto is no longer the coach of the professional team. Along with him, the assistant coach Rui Mota, the physical trainer Miguel Moreira, the performance analyst Igor Dias and the Football Director André Mazzuco.”
“The decision to reformulate the technical committee was made after an agreement was reached between the President of the Administrative Director, Alexandre Campello, the Vice President of Football, José Luiz Moreira, and the next President of the Administrative Director, Jorge Salgado.”
Sá Pinto’s dismissal doesn’t come as a shock given the club’s poor form of recent. In the Brazilian Serie A, Vasco are currently in the relegation zone and have only two wins from their last 13 games in all competitions.
