Maurizio Sarri took charge of Juventus ahead of the 2019/20 season, signing a three-year contract.
Juve did not exactly have the brightest of starts to the season under their new manager and remained inconsistent throughout. But Sarri did manage to guide them to Serie A success.
But the ninth straight Scudetto win was not enough for the club’s hierarchy as on Saturday, they decided to sack the Italian tactician after just one season.
The decision comes after Juve crashed out of the Champions League following a 2-2 aggregate loss to Lyon, who proceeded to the quarter-finals on away goals.
A statement on the official club website read: “Juventus Football Club announces that Maurizio Sarri has been relieved of his post as coach of the First Team.
“The club would like to thank the coach for having written a new page in Juventus’ history with the victory of the ninth-consecutive championship, the culmination of a personal journey that led him to climb all the divisions of Italian football.”
Following that dismissal, Juventus have now appointed club legend Andrea Pirlo as their new manager.
Only last week Juventus appointed Andrea Pirlo as their U23 manager.
Fast forward, and now that Maurizio Sarri failed to deliver Champions League success and Pirlo is in line for a promotion.
The club made the following statement:
“Today begins a new chapter of his career in the world of football. As it was said about a week ago: from Maestro to Mister.”
“From today he will be THE Coach for the Juventus people, as the club has decided to entrust him with the technical leadership of the First Team, after having already selected him for Juventus Under23.”
“Andrea Pirlo today signed a two-year contract until 30 June 2022.”
