From helping Gremio a lot so far this season, Diego Souza turned villain for his side as his missed penalty cost them taking all three points. On the other hand, Corinthians didn’t threaten their opposition much and left home the happier side with that result.
The first half saw the game mostly dominated by Renato Gaúcho’s men.
However, they lacked a clinical touch in the final third. Gremio put pressure on the Corinthians half in the opening minutes and created good chances starting with a header by Pepê that was saved by Cássio,
The next chance was an effort from Geromel that was close to creeping into the net. Timão were denied a penalty request from Kannemann in a clash with Jô in the box. The referee ordered the game to continue. Sandro Meira Ricci, at Central do Apito, also did not see the infraction. The first half ended that way.
Corinthians started the second half brightly with a header from Jô coming close. Then, Grêmio pressed again. In a rebound, Pepê and Alisson could just not break through opposition defence. On three occasions, Jean Pyerre could score, but couldn’t put power in his shot and saw one chance hit the crossbar.
A big moment came when Diego Souza was brought down in the area by Michel. Referee Bruno Arleu de Araújo consulted the VAR and scored the penalty. For his complaint, coach Tiago Nunes was expelled. Diego Souza went on to miss and the game ended that way.
Grêmio ends the night in fourth place, with five points while Corinthians is 15th, with one point and one game less. The two teams will return to the field next Wednesday. Grêmio will face Flamengo, in Maracanã. Corinthians hosts Coritiba at Arena Corinthians.
