The red card in PSG’s 1 nil loss to Lille certainly foreshadowed the highly anticipated return of Brazilian superstar Neymar back into the squad.
The defeat would see the defending champions suffer their eighth league loss this season against a Lille side fully fired up to claim the title this term.
Both sides saw red but it was the dismissal of Neymar that was the highlight of the game.
After 20 minutes, Jonathan David scored what went on to be the winning goal, tapping in Nanitamo Ikone’s cross to give Lille the early marker.
PSG dominated the game and saw much of the ball but failed to be clinical in front of goal.
Things soon took a sour turn.
Neymar was given a second yellow card saw for retaliation to a rash challenge by Tiago Djalo. The referee then issued him a straight red, which was not taken well by Neymar and his teammates.
Djalo also got a second yellow card for his part in the incident and it took the security personnel to stop Neymar from attacking the Lille star down the tunnel.
It was a sour return to the pitch for Neymar, having missed the last two months of action due to injury. It is a season where he has mostly suffered with injuries and has not featured as much as he would have loved to.
However, his new-found disciplinary issue is now something of a worry, with Neymar now picking up three red cards across his last 14 Ligue 1 games for PSG.
His start against Lille on Saturday was only his 13th in Ligue 1 this season.
